Supervisor:
Department of Architectural Engineering
Synopsis:

The course focuses on a more detailed explanation and practice of selected topics in the field of daylighting and building acoustics that students may encounter in future design practice.

Requirements:

-

Syllabus of lectures:

The order of lectures is subject to change. At the first lecture it will be announced whether the daylighting of buildings or the acoustics of buildings section is starting.

1. Dependence of the sunshine period on the orientation of the building to the cardinal directions and on the position of external shading obstacles

2. Effect of the size and position of the lighting aperture on the amount and distribution of daylight in the room, effect of overhanging structures on the quantity and quality of illumination

3. Colour of interior surfaces and effect on light reflectance, glare risk assessment

4. Assessment of the quality of the view, access of daylight to the building façade

5. Airborne sound insulation of building elements and between rooms in buildings - effect of composition and method of incorporation of the element on sound reduction index, calculation methods for detailed estimation of airborne sound insulation, flanking sound transmission

6. Impact sound insulation of building elements and between rooms in buildings - effect of the composition and method of incorporation of the element on the impact sound pressure level of the element, calculation methods for detailed estimation of the impact sound pressure level of the element, flanking transmission of impact sound

7. Reverberation time and its optimization, design of selected types of interior spaces, elements for sound absorption, reflection and scattering

Syllabus of tutorials:

The order of the exercises may vary. At the first exercise it will be announced whether the building daylighting part or the building acoustics part is starting.

1. Effect of orientation to cardinal directions and the effect of frontal structures on the illumination of living rooms

2. Assessment of daylighting, daylight zoning, consideration of the effect of size and position of lighting aperture

3. Daylight access to the building façade, the effect of the building on the shading of surrounding buildings

4. Calculation of the sound insulation of a partition, determination of the weighted apparent sound reduction index

5. Calculation of the impact sound pressure level of a floor structure with a floating floor, determination of the weighted impact sound pressure level

6. Design of room acoustic treatments to ensure optimal reverberation time

7. Consultation

Study Objective:

The aim of the course is to extend the basic knowledge in the field of day lighting and acoustics of buildings, which students have acquired during their bachelor studies.
