Students will significantly expand the basic knowledge of building acoustics that they have acquired during their undergraduate studies. The follow-up course is aimed not only at a more detailed explanation and practice of the basic topics, but also at expanding them to new topics that the building physics specialist or acoustician commonly encounters in building practice.

Knowledge of basic issues in the field of building acoustics.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction (overview of topics, repetition of basic concepts)

2. Airborne sound insulation of single building elements (influence of composition and method of construction on sound reduction index, detailed calculation methods, practical examples)

3. Airborne sound insulation of double building elements (effect of composition and method of construction on sound reduction index, detailed calculation methods, practical examples)

4. Impact sound insulation of floors (normalized impact sound pressure level of floors, effect of composition and installation method, detailed calculation methods, heavy and light floating floors and floor coverings, reduction of the impact sound pressure level as a function of frequency, calculation, practical examples)

5. Flanking sound transmission (transmission via flanking building elements and indirect transmission by air) and flanking transmission of impact sound (calculation methods, requirements for sound insulation between rooms)

6. Noise from technical equipment in buildings (sanitary installations, air handling systems, lifts)

7. Elastic mounting of machines (free and forced vibrations, resonance diagram), elastic mounting of building parts (staircases, lifts)

8. Airborne sound insulation of building envelope (sound transmission from outside to inside, windows, effect of ventilation elements)

9. Building as a stationary sound source (sound transmission from the building to the outside, effect of building envelope, distance and orientation)

10. Room acoustics (optimum reverberation time and acoustic design of selected types of indoor spaces - classrooms and auditoriums, gymnasiums, swimming pool halls, etc.)

11. Sound absorption elements, sound reflecting and scattering elements

12. Traffic noise (roads as a source of sound, methodology for calculating traffic noise)

13. Measures against traffic noise (urban, technical, organisational)

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Basic acoustic calculations - repetition (calculation with levels, direct calculation of weighted values of sound insulation quantities, calculation of reverberation time, etc.)

2. Sound reduction index of simple building elements (detailed calculation, determination of weighted (laboratory) sound reduction index)

3. Sound reduction index of double building elements (detailed calculation, determination of weighted (laboratory) sound reduction index)

4. Normalized impact sound pressure level of a floating floor (detailed calculation, determination of the weighted (laboratory) impact sound pressure level)

5. Flanking sound transmission (estimation according to EN calculation models and according to CŠN 73 0532)

6. Elastic mounting of building parts (design of acoustic solution for staircase or lift shaft)

7. Elastic mounting of machines

8. Airborne sound insulation of the building envelope (calculation of the airtightness of the composite structure and calculation of sound transmission from the outside to the room)

9. Sound transmission from the building to the outside (calculation of sound propagation from an industrial building through the building envelope to the surroundings)

10. Room acoustics (calculation of the reverberation time of an untreated room, determination of the optimum reverberation time, design of acoustic treatments)

11. Room acoustics (computational assessment of proposed modifications and evaluation)

12. Traffic noise (calculation of the equivalent sound pressure level A from ground traffic at a given point in the situation)

13. Consultation

Study Objective:

The student will consolidate the basic knowledge of acoustics of buildings acquired during the bachelor studies and extend it with new topics that may be commonly encountered in future practice. The student will be able to design and assess building elements and buildings in terms of acoustics.
