Synopsis:

Most defects of the building enclosures are the result of internal stresses from volumetric changes of materials caused by the action of non-force loads, for example periodic changes of temperature or moisture content. As a result, such defects decrease the durability and reliability of building components.

This subject attempts to combine construction mechanics with hygro-thermal performance of buildings and material engineering. It deals with the effect of climatic loads on the building envelope and physical processes taking place in the building envelope (transfer of heat, moisture and air) related to those climatic loads.

Requirements:

1) Credits for practical classes are obtained for active consultations and the development of tasks assigned in exercises.

2) The final examination consists of a theoretical test and two calculation problems. The final grade is a weighted average of the distinct parts of the exam

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Climatic loads acting on the building envelope and hygrothermal processes in the building envelope. Change in climatic conditions over time (changes at the global and local level). Electrical analogy of heat transfer.

2. Moisture transport – diffusion of water vapor, capillary flow, air flow (movement of moist air). Expressions for moisture content of porous materials. Retention of moisture in porous materials - sorption curve.

3. Historical development of building envelopes. General requirements for building envelopes. Requirements for moisture-safety of building envelopes. Calculation methods for hygrothermal assessment. Basic functional layers of the building envelope - choice of materials, order of layers, thickness of layers, connection of layers, technology.

4. Volumetric changes due to action of non-force loads - a beam from one homogeneous material.

5. Volumetric changes due to action of non-force loads - a beam from several layers of homogeneous materials.

6. Principles to influencing moisture balance of building components. Examples of real moisture-related problems including analysis of their cause and possible solutions.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Ú1 Thermal and moisture balance of the basement. Preparation of boundary conditions for Ú3.

2. Consultations.

3. Ú2 Analysis of the sorption curve of the given building material.

4. Consultations.

5. Ú3 Drying of moisture from building components. Drying of a basement wall.

6. Consultations.

7. Ú4 Thermal stress - a homogeneous beam subjected to temperature change.

8. Consultations.

9. Consultations.

10. Thermal stress - a multilayered beam subjected to temperature change.

11. Consultations.

12. Consultations + credits.

Study Objective:

Acquiring knowledge and basic practice in heat and moisture transfer in building components and effects of non-force loads on building elements.
