Synopsis:

The course focuses on the basic introduction to cooling technology used for air conditioning of buildings. In the introductory part, students will be introduced to the basic theoretical foundations of thermodynamics, design and sizing requirements for cooling technology. The core part of the course is aimed at familiarizing students with various system solutions of refrigeration technology for building air conditioning.

Requirements:

Passing the test with at least 60%.

Demonstration of knowledge during the oral examination.

Syllabus of lectures:

Introduction to cooling

Basics of cooling theory, thermodynamics

Fundamentals of cooling theory, thermodynamics

Components of refrigeration equipment (compressors, heat exchangers)

Air conditioning of buildings - Sources of cold, refrigerants - connection to air conditioning systems

Building air conditioning - end elements, chilled water circuits (fan coils, chilled ceilings, chilled beams)

Building air conditioning - passive cooling methods (adibatic cooling, ..)

Study Objective:

The aim is to provide students with a basic understanding of refrigeration technology used for air conditioning in buildings. Students will be introduced to the theoretical basis of thermodynamics and the requirements for the design and sizing of refrigeration technology. A core part of the course will be a detailed exploration of different system solutions for building air conditioning including practical aspects of design and sizing. Other objectives include an understanding of the working fluids used in refrigeration technology, the principles of mechanical refrigeration in compressor, absorption and sorption systems, identification of important components of refrigeration technology, and issues of refrigerant distribution in buildings. The curriculum also includes an understanding of various methods of cold sharing for the building environment and an introduction to basic air conditioning systems.
