- Supervisor:
- Department of Road Structures
- Synopsis:
-
The objective of the subject is to provide students a more detailed knowledge of environmental issues related to the design, technical solutions, technology and material base of road structures with an emphasis on current needs and trends, which include both practical issues - topsoil management, burial elaboration or externalities of the design of transport structures, as well as new approaches such as the progressive development of the application of LCA analyses, approaches to the possibility of assessing the carbon footprint of road construction solutions or the use of different types of alternative materials in the framework of an active approach to the circular economy.
- Requirements:
-
A prerequisite for enrolling in and completing this course is completion of 136DSUP or 136DSZP, in which the student has acquired basic knowledge in transportation construction, particularly issues related to road construction.
- Syllabus of lectures:
-
*Building materials used in road construction - characteristics, availability, „reusability“, use of bio-materials
*Recycling in road construction (technology, materials, environmental characteristics)
*Use of secondary raw materials in road construction (slag, ash, incinerator ash, rubber, plastics)
*Reducing the energy intensity of road construction technologies
*Problems of road traffic pollution (abrasion and generation of fine particles, impact of chemical winter maintenance, etc.), methods of detection and monitoring
*Externalities of road construction and road transport (emissions and noise pollution from traffic; operating costs)
*Multi-criteria assessment methodologies and application to transport structures
*Traffic accident issues (monitoring and recording, use of data in road infrastructure modifications, safety audit and inspection issues)
* Roadway-vehicle noise issues (how to measure, noise reduction solutions - low noise surfaces)
*Approaches and solutions for carbon footprint monitoring, LCA and EPD development
*Long-life pavements. Road maintenance as an aspect of life extension
*Solutions for water retention and management in road structures (drainage layer systems, possible solutions for „heat islands“ in cities, etc.)
*Soil management in the context of transport structures - basics of soil survey, principles of soil protection, procedures for removing soil from the Agricultural Land Fund, basics of technical and biological reclamation
- Syllabus of tutorials:
-
During the exercises, some of the topics of the course lectures will be practiced on practical examples (e.g. the creation of a backfill study, a task focused on determining the carbon footprint or simplified LCA for part of the road construction, the application of multi-criteria evaluation of transport construction).
