This one-semester course should provide a gentle introduction to linguistics and language research for students majoring in IT and programming. Students get acquainted with basic concepts used in language descriptions as well as major theories influencing the current mainstream in linguistics. Specific attention will be paid to empirical and quantitative methods in linguistics, including the use of language corpora, and to specific issues of Czech.

Topics covered:
1. Language, communication and linguistics – brief history and current trends in linguistics
2. Language corpora and their compilation – methods, problems, use cases
3. Language system, structure, layers, linguistic disciplines and units
4. Phonetics – sound, phoneme, morphoneme, syllable, speech segment; specifics of spoken communication
5. Graphemics; Morphology – word structure, morpheme, word formation, productivity; language variability
6. Morphology (flective) – grammatical categories of Czech words
7. Lexicon and vocabulary – word and lexeme, semantic relations of units within lexicon; types of dictionaries
8. Lexicon and vocabulary – multi-word expressions (collocations) and phraseology; onomastics
9. Syntax and its limitations – sentence structure and syntagmatics, context analysis
10. Text, style and discourse – basic quantitative characteristics of text and language, corpus-based register studies, corpus-assisted discourse analysis
11. Czech in various comparisons – history of Czech, typological and genetic classification of Czech
12. Sociolinguistic aspects of Czech – stratification, dialects, codification and prescription (vs. description)
