Department of Hydraulic Structures
Synopsis:

The course focuses on general understanding and conceptual design of hydraulic structures. Within the first part of the course, students will learn fundamentals of design and management of reservoirs, weirs on rivers and navigation structures, including locks and lifts. Second part of the course provides in depth view to dam engineering and hydropower. The course is suitable for both master and bachelor degree students and assumes basic knowledge of hydraulics and hydrology. The course is natural extension of the course Water and Environmental Engineering in terms of design and operation of hydraulic structures.

Requirements:

previous study, ideally the study course Water and Environmental Engineering

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Basic function and purposes of water reservoirs

2. Storage function of reservoirs

3. Flood-control function of reservoirs and storage function of reservoirs

4. Key design questions and documents; loading on hydraulic structures

5. Fixed and gated weirs, design, operation and assessment of hydraulic structures

6. Engineering fundamentals of inland waterways and navigation

7. Dams - description, construction types, design requirements

8. Concrete, earthfill and rockfill dams - foundation and technology

9. Appurtenant structures and construction processes

10. Energy, types of energy, conversion of water energy into electricity, transmission system, hydro-energetic potential

11. Head and Flow Concentration, Intake Structure, Powerhouse, Water Transmission

12. Hydropower equipment - turbines, valves, generators, control system

13. Reserve (Public Holiday, Consultations)

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Environmental impacts of the hydraulic structures

2. Storage function of reservoirs

3. Flood-control function of reservoirs

4. Hydraulic design of a fixed weir or uncontrolled spillway

5. Hydraulic design of a gated weir

6. Design of a stilling basin

7. Stability assessment of a concrete gravity dam

8. Basic design and seepage analysis of an earthfill dam

9. Bottom outlets, tunnels and shaft spillways

10. Pump storage power plant calculation, unit recalculation

11. Calculating the annual production of a low-head power plant

12. Unit turbine characteristics, conversion to prototype size

13. Reserve - consultation; Public Holiday

Study Objective:

The aim of the study is to acquaint students with the principles of specific structural design of hydraulic structures and the overall design of technological equipment of hydrotechnical structures. The aim of the study is as well to deepen the general information on the construction of hydraulic structures acquired during the study of the subject Water and Environmental Engineering (WEE).
