Supervisor:
Department of Biomedical Technology
Synopsis:

The course deals with the following topics: general image processing system, basics of image acquisition using image sensors, sampling, quantization and representation of digital images, aliasing, transfer properties of the imaging system, color image acquisition, overview of image formats, digitizing rasters, video signal, A/D video signal converters, frame-grabber. HW and SW for image processing, compression methods, compression standards, signal recording methods, digital signal recording, selected recording standards for image recording, specifics for applications in clinical practice.

Requirements:

Credit requirements:

Attendance at exercise is mandatory (excuses only for serious documented reasons). The student must be prepared for the exercise according to the materials for the tasks and lectures (see test below). It is possible to get 100 points per semester. Points can be obtained for a successfully passed test at the beginning of the exercise (4 tests in total) and participation. I.e. 96 points for 4 tests and 4 points for participation. An apology from exercise is possible only with an apology for serious health reasons and tests have to be complemented.

There are always 4 open questions in each test, each for 6 points (max. 24 points, min. 12 points for all tests in total). The maximum and minimum number of points achieved by the student is given by the sum of all tests in the semester. It is not required to achieve a given minimum number of points in each test. The questions are from the content of the previous and related lectures and exercises. Credit is obtained for the number of points equal to or higher than 50 points.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Digitization of image and video signal

2. Image data formats

3. HW and SW for digitization and image processing

4. Image compression, methods

5. Image compression, standards

6. Video signal recording, part 1

7. Video signal recording, part 2

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. A/D converter, frame grabber. Use of Matlab as a SW means for communication with a device providing a video signal. Image sampling and quantization. Design of a test pattern, the origin of aliasing and its manifestations.

2. Color image capture, interpolation from Bayer mask. Load the image format and identification the data in the file header.

3. Analog image recording with rotating heads and digital recording - measurement of resolution using measuring image tests (Siemens star), comparison of different systems (VHS, Super VHS, DV, recording in 4K UHD format).

4. Experiment with image compression, implementation of the basic procedure for JPEG format in Matlab. Experiment with image compression, use of integral transformations (spectrum).

5. Experiment with image compression, implementation of the basic procedure for JPEG format in Matlab. Experiment with image compression, evaluation of image quality (assessment of the influence of individual levels).

6. Principle of CD/DVD (measuring set).

7. Example of MPEG2 codec operation + example of SW for transport stream analysis, illustration of differences between H.264 MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC and H.265/MPEG-H Part 2 HEVC standards, credit.
