Synopsis:

The course introduces students to the basic methods of research work and the requirements for scientific communication. The course also introduces students to the principles of writing and presenting of bachelor's thesis.

Requirements:

Entry requirements of the course:

The course has no special entry requirements.

Requirements for the graduate assessment:

1. All homework assignments must be submitted and revised according to a lecturer's instructions.

2. All oral presentations must be presented and revised according to a lecturer's instructions.

3. Active attendance is required; absence must be properly excused and replaced.

Grade:

Timely submission of all homework assignments and presentations in the required quality: 70% of grade (35% abstract, 35% oral presentation).

Written final test from the material of lectures, seminars and assigned individual study: 30% of grade.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Structure of scientific work; typical parts, their purpose and content. Bachelor thesis.

2. Information sources; types of scientific publications, citation databases and digital libraries.

3. Publishing ethics; purpose and way of citing sources, plagiarism.

4. Style of scientific work; typography, mathematical typesetting.

5. Results; figures and graphs, tables.

6. Oral presentation of scientific work; principles for preparation and performance.

7. Research and experiment; research studies, randomization.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Examples of scientific articles, examples of characteristic elements in the text.

2.–4. Extended abstract. Preparation of an extended abstract (homework) and its evaluation in a group.

5. Graphs and diagrams (examples, homework solutions).

6.–7. Oral presentation of scientific work. Preparation (homework). Presentation and its evaluation in a group.

Study Objective:

Students understand the importance of research work, understand the basic requirements for the content and quality of the scientific publication, are familiar with the structure of scientific work and can extract key information from it. Students can search for and use quality information sources for their professional work. They can briefly and factually present the results of their professional activities in written and spoken form. Students understand the importance of experiments in technical and scientific disciplines.
