Synopsis:

An overview of basic ethical concepts and theories in the context of applied ethics with respect to the professional orientation, maintenance, and development of humanities in technically oriented students.

Prerequisites and co-requisites: Knowledge of humanities in the scope of secondary school studies (basics of philosophy, history, psychology).

Acquired knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies: Knowledge of basic concepts and controversial topics in theoretical and applied ethics, the ability to critically think, discuss, argue and defend their own views in ethical dilemma situations, developing the ability to work with literature, enhance empathy skills.

Requirements:

An oral exam in the form of a discussion on one of the topics from the lectures. Based on the required and recommended literature, the student will present and discuss their knowledge of basic ethical concepts and demonstrate their ability to orientate in a particular issue. During the exam, the examiner may ask additional questions in the scope of the required literature and the material covered in the lectures. The evaluation is performed according to the classification diagram standardly used at FBMI CTU in Prague. A minimum interval of seven days is recommended between subsequent examination dates.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Ethics as a philosophical discipline, basic terminology of ethics, history, and presence of applied ethics in the context of bioethics & medical ethics

2. The relationship between ethics and law deontological ethical codes of professions in biomedical engineering

3. Patients' rights and compliance with regard to professions in biomedical engineering

4. Ethical issues in geriatrics, palliative care, disability, helplessness in relation to the quality of life and human dignity

5. Problematics of euthanasia

6. Problematics of human reproduction

7. Genotechnology - cloning, stem cells, embryonic research, the problem of genetic testing

8. Ethical issues of organ transplantation and xenotransplantation

9. Research in medicine and its regulation, introduction of new technologies (artificial organs, transhumanism, robotics, IT)

10. Current controversial topics in ethics (alternative medicine, allocation of resources in health care, vaccination)
