Synopsis:

The content of the Biology course is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge of individual chapters of general biology, such as: the basics of cell and developmental biology, genetics and possible genetic interactions, the basics of virology, microbiology and molecular biology, structure and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cell metabolism, the cell as an open thermodynamic system, the cell cycle and its regulation, mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and teratogenesis, genetics of multicellular organisms, ontogenetic and phylogenetic development of organisms, the human genome, and population genetics.

Requirements:

Form of verification of study results: written test, followed by oral examination.

Collective deadline: successful completion of the written test. 30 questions with choosing the correct answer or completing terms, or matching questions and answers for possible continuation to the oral exam with a test success rate of 50-60%;

Other terms: oral examination of the material discussed.

There must be an interval of at least 7 days between the first and remedial exam dates.

Syllabus of lectures:

Lectures were combined into 2 hour blocks each

1. Introduction to general biology. Molecular foundations of cytology. Biochemical construction of living organisms

2. Non-cellular organisms.

3. Construction and function of the prokaryotic cell.

4. Construction and function of the eukaryotic cell.

5. Cellular cycle. Cell division and cell death

6. An introduction to genetics. The basics of Mendelian genetics. Inheritance and gender. Genetics of populations.

7. Mutagenesis. Carcinogenesis Teratogenesis. Genetic prognosis.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Subject has no exercise

Study Objective:

The aim of the study is to acquaint the student with the molecular and biochemical foundations of the structure of cells and living organisms, the basics of virology and the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. For the prokaryotic cell, the student will learn about the phases of the cell cycle, cell division and types of cell death. In the course, the student will also gain knowledge of the basics of Mendelian genetics, sex inheritance and of population genetics. Finally, from mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and genetic prognoses.
