Synopsis:

The aim of the course is the acquisition of language skills, writing strategies and active vocabulary leading to students' ability to independently compose formally and stylistically appropriate texts in English language. The course focuses on practical application of the given phenomena in the field of project/concept note writing. Methodologically, the course relies on formal language analysis, systematic development of specialised vocabulary, competent use of relevant grammar, systematic practice of typical case-study situations, teamwork and giving feedback.

Requirements:

Students who in the academic year 2015/2016 or earlier finished subject „Anglický jazyk 3 (04JA3)“ are not entitled to enrol into this subject.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Introduction to the problem of concept writing, terminology, practical questions dealing with the class organisation. The structure of the following classes closely follows the structure of the concept note paper, focusing on case studies and examples taken from students? work.

2.Project summary - project summary, explanation of expected outcomes, typical errors

3.Project rationale - explanation, typical errors/problems and text analysis

4.Link to donor - explanation, typical error and case study analysis

5.Project description - explanation, typical errors/problems and case study analysis

6.Project location - explanation, typical errors/problems and case study analysis

7.Target group/beneficiaries - explanation, typical errors/problems and case study analysis

8.Expected results / impact - explanation, typical errors/problems and cases study analysis

9.Sustainability - explanation, typical errors/problems and case study analysis

10.Implementing organisation and partners - explanation, typical errors/problems and case study analysis

11.Budget and time frame - explanation, typical errors/problems and case study analysis

13.Final discussion, evaluation and feedback

Assessment: final Concept Note paper and project presentation

Possible assessment in case of the need to assess the subject online includes submitting the final paper via e-mail or LMS platform (e.g. Moodle) and a video recording of a student presentation.

Study Objective:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

-write a Concept Note paper in English which meets all formal and stylistic criteria

-actively use specialised project writing terminology and vocabulary in English

-chose and apply appropriate language tools in respect to the given situation

-apply a broad range of formal and stylistic strategies in spoken but first of all written English

-analyse discourse and communicational strategies in project writing

-internalise correct habits and attitudes connected with the production of texts in English
