Tutor:

Supervisor:
Department of Biomedical Technology
Synopsis:

The course provides the introduction into clinical electrocardiology: from basics of ECG to the review of the latest research in the field of ECG diagnostics and risk stratification.

Requirements:

In the case of foreign lecturers, there will be a weeklong block of intensive contact education for the number of students at least five. If the number of students is less than five, the course will be self-study with consultations using VoIP (e.g. Skype) and a contact 1-or 2-day seminar. The contact seminar will take place at the FBMI or at the home institution of a foreign lecturer. The subjects are concluded by an oral examination. The student must elaborate a paper on a given topic together with the exam in case of the controlled self-study.

Two laboratory exercises are required for admission to the exam (attested by a protocol signed by the student, the tutor and the supervisor of the course).

The protocols will be archived in the Department for Doctoral Studies.

Syllabus of lectures:

•Recording and interpretation of electrocardiogram. Reference values of standard ECG and 24-hour continuous ECG.

•Methods of assessment of autonomic influences on the heart. Autonomic reactivity tests. Heart rate variability.

•Chamber enlargement and intraventricular conduction abnormalities.

•Myocardial ischemia (1). Demand vs supply ischemia. Detection of transitory myocardial ischemia. Holter ECG monitoring. Exercise tests.

•Myocardial ischemia (2). Acute coronary syndromes. ECG criteria of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-STEMI. ECG differential diagnostics. Determining of the myocardial infarction localization and the site of occlusion.

•Myocardial ischemia (3). Continuous ECG monitoring in ischemia and reperfusion. Signs of reperfusion. Arrhythmias in acute ischemia and reperfusion. Risk stratification.

•Bradyarrhythmias. Sinus node dysfunctions. Atrio-ventricular conduction disturbances.

•Narrow QRS tachyarrhythmias. Supraventricular tachyarrhythmias. Atrial fibrillation

•Syncope. Diagnostics and differential diagnostics. ECG in detection of cardiogenic syncope.

•Genetic syndromes. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Arrythmogenic RV dysplasia. Long QT syndrome. Brugada syndrome.

•ECG analysis in patient with implantable devises. Pacemakers, CRT and ICD

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. ECG in patient with arrhythmia. Differential diagnostics of tachycardia with narrow QRS tachycardia and wide QRS tachycardia (practical exercises, discussion – 4 hours)

2. ECG decision making in patient with coronary artery disease (practical exercises, discussion – 4 hours)
