Synopsis:

“Healthcare as part of the public sector” this course ekes out the gained general economic knowledge with issues from public economy discipline, all applied to the healthcare sector. In the introductory part, the role of the public sector within the national economy is studied and discussed from different points of view. The concept of market and government failure problematic is presented and discussed - the accent is put mainly on public goods, externalities and control mechanism in the public sector.

Requirements:

The exam consists of two parts: written and oral.

•Opening lecture: State and public sector,

•The place of the public sector within the national economy. Public sector functions.

•Different approaches to the role of the public sector/government/state in the national economy.

•Reasons of the public sector importance.

•Public sector existence: game theory application.

•Healthcare sector, its role, importance (game theory application).

•Public goods, merit goods and publically provided goods.

•Externalities.

•Government failure.

•Public sector control.
