Synopsis:

Basic course of Soil Mechanics for Civil Engineers. Introduction to origin of soils, soil description, multi-phase media behaviour, soil classification, compressibility and shear resistance, soil testing, earth pressures, assessment of stability and deformation of soil mass, applications in civil engineering.

Syllabus of lectures:

Basic course of Soil Mechanics for Civil Engineers. Introduction to origin of soils, soil description, multi-phase media behaviour, soil classification, compressibility and shear resistance, soil testing, earth pressures, assessment of stability and deformation of soil mass, applications in civil engineering.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Particle-Size Distribution Curve (PSDC)

2. Determination of water content, bulk density, saturation

3. Soil classification

4. Effective Stress Calculation

5. Permeability of soil and application in civil engineering

6. Soil compressibility - laboratory tests and evaluation of results

7. Shear resistance in direct shear box, evaluation of test results

8. Shear resistance in triaxial cell, evaluation of test results

9. Calculation of lateral stresses in soil and water action

10. Retaining Wall - calculation of solid particles and water actions

11. Slope stability calculation - excavation

12. Calculation of settlement of shallow footing

13. Proctor Compaction Test
