Synopsis:

Theoretical Geodesy 2 introduces students to the issue of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and their use in practice. It expands students' knowledge from the previous subject (Geodetic instruments) on the issue of satellite movement around the Earth, errors in GNSS measurements and methods of their elimination, methods of processing GNSS measurements and detailed information on current GNSS.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Explanation of the concept of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), GNSS segments.

2. Coordinate systems, time.

3. Keplerian motion

4. Disturbing motion of GNSS satellites in the real Earth’s gravity field.

5. Fundamentals of electromagnetic wave theory

6. GNSS receiver, code measurements, phase measurements.

7. Errors affecting GNSS measurements

8. Measurement difference, linear combination of measurements

9. The problem of solving integer ambiguities.

10. Overview and specifics of GNSS systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS, NavIC, SBAS).

11. Geodetic applications of GNSS, WGS84, transformation of GNSS results into reference systems

12. Evaluation of GNSS measurement results, testing of GNSS equipment

13. International cooperation in the field of GNSS – IGS and EPN

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. GPS - calculation of satellite orbits

2. GPS - osculation elements of the satellite path

3. GPS - processing code measurements

4. GPS - calculation of station position using double differences

Study Objective:

To become familiar with the issue of the use of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) in practice, including the area of systematic errors and methods of their elimination.
