The course builds on the basics of mathematical cartography and introduces students to the topographic and thematic parts of cartography. It also includes an excursion into polygraphic techniques, theory of colour, copyright and editorial work. As a part of the course, an excursion to the offices of COSMC is organized.

Cartography as a science, cartographic works, publishers, map collections.
Map language, writing on maps, geographical nomenclature.
History of cartography with an emphasis on the first cartographic sources of the Czech lands.
Content elements of maps, generalization, representation of relief on maps.
Thematic maps, methods of thematic expression.
Theory of colour, principles of using colours on maps.
State map work – civil, ZABAGED; state map work – military.
Historical and contemporary printing techniques.
Prepress preparation, colour reproduction.
Editorial work, a project of a cartographic work, evaluation of map works.
Copyright in cartography. Cartographic organizations, professional associations.
International projects in cartography, web maps and atlases.
Web services, cloud solutions, further development of digital cartography and publication of cartographic works.

The goal is to teach the students the theory and practical issues of cartographic science, making them able to create a quality thematic, topographical or schematic map, understand the principles of their creation, the correct use of colours, fonts, etc.
