Supervisor:
Department of Material Engineering and Chemistry
Synopsis:

The course content is an introduction to the study of sophisticated building materials (SMART materials) on the basis of cement-based materials and alkali-activated aluminosilicates with respect to the materials properties, optimization leading to achievement of desired sophisticated properties and usability in practice. The subject focuses mainly on new materials with a higher added value and enables the students to get acquainted with the latest trends in the building industry. The subject also touches on the multi-criteria evaluation of materials with respect to the principles of sustainable development.

Requirements:

- Passing laboratory exercises

- Elaboration of semester work based on experimentally determined data (per workgroup)

- Presentation of results (per workgroup) with discussion

Syllabus of lectures:

1) Introductory lecture

2) Introduction to the design of innovative building materials

3) Comparison of the properties of alkali-activated aluminosilicates (AAA) and cement composites

4) Input materials for the design of (multifunctional) AAA

5) New functional properties of AAA dependent on electrical properties

6) New functional properties of AAA independent of electrical properties, life cycle assessment of materials

Syllabus of tutorials:

1) Design and production of samples for material characterization 1

2) Design and production of samples for material characterization 2

3) Material characterization of the designed mixtures 1

4) Material characterization of the designed mixtures 2

5) Evaluation of the setting/hardening properties of AAA mixtures and LCA

6) Presentation of the characterization results of the designed AAA mixtures

7) Final consultations, credits awarding

Study Objective:

Acquaint students with the design of modern building materials with a reduced impact on the environment and new functional properties that have application potential in civil engineering.
