Synopsis:

The subject is focused on deepening information about instruments and methods for gene mapping, as well as obtaining new information about chip techniques. Students will acquire theoretical and practical skills in ways of classifying individual genes in ontological pathways, modular analysis, and comparison of selected genetic polymorphisms that affect human diseases, as well as information on modern methodological approaches to study of polygenically controlled diseases by functional, positional and express cloning. with particular attention to positional cloning. In practice, they will verify their knowledge in working with available databases. Learning outcomes of the course unit The subject will allow the students to acquire knowledge in selected methods of genetics and genomics on the model of laboratory mice (Mus musculus) with an emphasis on the research of resistance to infectious diseases.

Requirements:

Teaching is performed in the form of the controlled self-study with regular consultations. Except for the examination the student is required to write an extra study on a given topic.

Syllabus of lectures:

Syllabus of lectures: 1) Devices and methods for gene mapping (I). 2) Devices and methods for mapping genes (II). 3) Chip technology (I). 4) Chip technology (II). 5) Overview of system susceptibility analysis approaches. 6) Work with KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) and GO (Gene Ontology). 7) Work with the STRING database. 8) Modular analysis (I). 9) Modular analysis (II). 10) Multifactorial inheritance. 11) Monogenic and polygen-controlled diseases. 12) Functional, positional and express cloning. 13) Mouse models used in positional cloning. 14) An example of genetic mapping.

Study Objective:

The goal of study is to obtain information about the instruments and methods for gene mapping as well as information on the chip techniques. Students also acquire skills in ways including individual genes into ontological pathways, modular analysis and comparison of selected genetic polymorphisms that influence to the human diseases. Another aim is to obtain information on modern methodological approaches to the study polygenically diseases controlled with function, positional cloning and expression, with special attention to positional cloning. This course enables students to enhance knowledge in chosen methods of genetics and genomics model laboratory mice (Mus musculus), with an emphasis on research into resistance to infectious diseases.
