- Lecturer:
- Miroslav Brouček, Ladislav Satrapa
- Tutor:
- Miroslav Brouček, Ladislav Satrapa
- Supervisor:
- Department of Hydraulic Structures
- Synopsis:
-
The course focuses on specific issues of design, implementation and operation of dams in relation to foundation conditions and construction types of dams. Selected accidents and failures of major dams are presented and discussed in detail, including the resulting enhancements in understanding of the processes involved. In addition, the technological challenges associated with the implementation of massive concrete structures, the establishment and modification of foundation joints spanning several hectares, and the implementation of backfill dams in confining conditions are presented.
- Requirements:
-
previous study - course 142PPVD (Přehrady a provoz vodních děl)
- Syllabus of lectures:
-
1. Introduction, history of dam engineering and development of geotechnics
2. Lessons learned from the Francis Dam disaster, landslide risks, spatial effects of dams
3. Structural and geotechnical challenges of small reservoir embankments
4. Dams as critical infrastructure and strategic targets - war and terrorism
5. Specifics of concrete arch-gravity dam construction (Hoover Dam example)
6. Seepage and internal erosion in foundations and fill dams (Šárovce weir)
7. Failure of the Bílá Desná Dam and specifics of the Snow River project
8. The Panama Canal - construction and upgrading; lessons from the Malpasset dam accident
9. Risks of activation of landslides into reservoir areas, consequences and preventive measures - Vajont and Chance
10. Failures and rehabilitation of dams in the Czech Republic (Slezská Harta, Jirkov, Morávka, Mostiště)
11. Construction of dams in remote locations (Iceland) and selected dam failures around the world (Teton, Tous, Calderwood; etc.)
12. Modern technologies for modification of soil properties for earth dams and subsoils
13. Reserve - updates on dam engineering challenges, reserve for public holiday
- Syllabus of tutorials:
-
The tutorials focuse on the topics discussed during the particular lectures.
- Study Objective:
-
The aim is to introduce students to the unusual aspects of dam construction resulting from the size of the structures in question, the loads acting on them and the uncertainties of the input materials for design and assessment.
