Supervisor:
Department of Geotechnics
Synopsis:

The course is a continuation of the course Underground structures and rock mechanics, which is part of the Bachelor's degree programme. The course deepens the knowledge in the field of underground construction and provides practical experience in the design and implementation of underground structures. The student tries out the application of the knowledge gained on a simple tunnel project. An integral part of the course is also an excursion to a completed underground construction in Prague.

Requirements:

Required participation, submission of a project with a satisfactory grade.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to the design of underground structures - requirements for the designer, stages of project documentation, complications of IG surveys

2.Design - assignment, principles of directional and elevation design of underground works, stability and deformation of underground works, non-traffic parts of road tunnels

3.Less common methods of underground works construction

4. Structural design of underground structures - design approaches, structural calculations, mathematical models

5.Project - design of cross-section geometry, excavation subdivision, waterproof insulation, final lining

6. TBM embossing - types of machines, segmental lining, complications during implementation

7. Geotechnical monitoring - reasons, methods, ISGM, complications

8.Securing above ground development - passporting, methods of securing, failures, complications

9.Emergencies in the implementation of underground works

10. Excursions

Syllabus of tutorials:

In the exercises, practical assignments are used to practice the professional issues presented in the lectures.

Study Objective:

Application of theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the design of a simple tunnel boring project. Acquire an overview of the procedures in the design of underground structures.
