Supervisor:
Department of Indoor Enviromental and Building Services Engineering
Synopsis:

The course is aimed at explaining the issues of modelling and simulation of energy behaviour of buildings. Students will be introduced to an overview of tools and methodologies for solving these problems and learn how to use the simulation software DesignBuilder. In addition, they will be introduced to climate data, materials, construction and other factors affecting building behaviour. The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge and practical experience in modelling and simulating building energy behaviour.

Requirements:

There are no special requirements for students admitted to the Buildings and Environments program; for students in other programs, consult the course guarantor.

Syllabus of lectures:

Framework content of lectures:

- Introduction to building behaviour modelling in terms of energy and indoor environment, overview of tools, basics of problem solving methodology using simulation. Overview of common engineering problems solvable with simulation tools. Overview of simulation tools.

- Basic principles of when to use BEPM; Case study of an area cooling application; Tools and methods for modelling and simulation of building energy behaviour;

Modelling of building operations. Orientation to the principles of model creation in the simulation software DesignBuilder. Use of DesignBuilder simulation software for solving various problems.

- Climatic data; materials and construction; optical properties; internal gains and loads.

- Simulation of HVAC systems, Case study of energy system model, Visualization of fluid flow.

A detailed lecture schedule is given on the course moodle.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Framework content of the tutorial:

- Introduction to DesignBuilder - Orientation in the way of input data input, simulation parameters, generation and processing of outputs. Detailed and simplified model

- Analysis of the finished model, allternatives of input parameters, used to calculate heating and cooling capacity, analysis of temperatures during the year.

- Creation of the building model.

- Detailed HVAC model Creation of schematic, parameter settings, data analysis.

- Processing of the actual task

The detailed content of each tutorial is given on the course moodle.

Study Objective:

- To introduce students to the issues of modelling the behaviour of buildings in terms of energy and indoor environment and to present an overview of tools and methodologies for solving these problems.

- To teach students the basic principles for the use of tools to simulate the energy behaviour of buildings.

- Introduce students to the DesignBuilder simulation software and teach them to understand its principles and use for solving various engineering problems.

- Introduce students to climate data, materials, construction, optical properties, and other factors affecting building behavior.

- To expose students to the simulation of HVAC systems and the use of energy system models and fluid flow visualization.

- Provide students with hands-on experience using DesignBuilder software
