Synopsis:

The aim of the course is to familiarize the student with a wireless transmission channel in a real environment from the point of view of wave propagation for the needs of planning terrestrial and satellite wireless links. The content includes both deeper theoretical foundations of radio wave propagation in the atmosphere and practical procedures for designing terrestrial and satellite, fixed and mobile links in various frequency bands according to ITU-R recommendations.

Requirements:

-

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Unification of basic concepts

2. Specific properties of transmission environments in terms of frequency spectrum and services, wave propagation mechanisms in the atmosphere

3. Propagation of ground-based spatial waves in the troposphere

4. Wave interaction with terrain and other obstacles

5. Directional terrestrial links, power balance, types of leakage

6. Design of a directional link according to ITU-R P.530

7. Issues of interference in wireless links and frequency planning

8. Mobile links, wave propagation in urban areas and interiors

9. Empirical and deterministic wave propagation models

10. Measurement and processing of mobile link fading

11. Wireless optical links, connections in the visible spectrum

12. Wave propagation in the anisotropic environment of the ionosphere and the influence of the ionosphere on wireless links

13. Power balance of a satellite link

14. Introduction to other types of wireless links (tropospheric link, wave propagation in tunnels, etc.)

Syllabus of tutorials:

The tutorials are based on two larger projects. In the first, students work in small teams to design directional links according to the ITU-R P.530 methodology. In the second, they measure mobile link fadings and then process them. In addition to writing reports, both projects conclude with a joint presentation of the results. Discussions and mutual comparisons of the results and approaches of individual teams to the solutions during the presentations serve to deepen understanding of the issues.
