Synopsis:

Approach to water management in reservoirs and water management systems. Water management of reservoir storage and protection functions. Analysis of the process of inflow to and outflow from the reservoir. Preparation of materials for the design of reservoirs. Design of reservoirs with multi-year, seasonal and short-term runoff control. Flood protection. Design of the retention function of reservoirs. Safety of water works during floods. Operation and management of reservoirs. Interaction of reservoirs with the environment. Reservoirs in the natural environment. Water quality in reservoirs.

Requirements:

1. Active participation in seminars

2. Processing and submission of correctly and completely solved tasks. At least three tasks will also have an optional part of your choice.

3. Preparation and submission of a seminar paper

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to the subject. Reservoirs, water management systems, droughts and floods.

2. Reservoirs as a means of water management. Typology of reservoirs and water management systems.

3. Types of substrate. Analysis of the distribution characteristics of the process of inflow to a reservoir.

4. Analysis of the autocorrelation properties of the inflow process to the reservoir.

5. Methodologies for the design of reservoirs and water management systems.

6. Behavioural analysis of reservoirs and water management systems.

7. Water management design of reservoir storage function.

8. Water management design of reservoirs with short-term runoff control.

9. Compensatory runoff management. Reservoirs with water transfer.

10. Water management design of the protective function of reservoirs: background and design.

12. Assessment of the safety of water works during floods. Dry reservoirs. Flood management of runoff.

13. Reservoirs in the natural environment. Water quality in reservoirs.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Environmental issues of reservoirs. Discussion. Small expert survey (task 1). Assignment of seminar papers.

2. Graphical and numerical methods of water management solutions (task 2).

3. Placement of a reservoir in a valley (task 3).

4. Statistical and autocorrelation analysis of flow series (problem #4).

5. Modelling of synthetic river flow series (task 5).

6. Continuation of Task 5.

7. Solution of a direct drawdown storage reservoir I (task 6).

8. Solution of the storage tank with direct draw-off II (continuation of task No.6).

9. Compensatory runoff control (Task 7).

10. Solution of the protective function of the reservoir I. Flood wave transformation (Task 8)

11. Solution of the protective function of the reservoir II. Safety of the dam. Operational management of the reservoir during a flood (continuation of Task 8)

12. Operational management of the reservoir storage function during hydrological drought I. (Task 9)

13. Operational management of the reservoir storage function during hydrological drought II (continuation of Task 9)
