Department of Architectural Engineering

The subject is focused on key principles in the design and assessment of fire safety of buildings, especially from the point of view of national requirements in the Czech Republic, and on familiarizing students with the following key topics: fire terminology in the field of fire protection and safety of buildings, statistical monitoring of events, the concept of fire prevention and fire repression, the mission of the Czech Fire and Rescue Service, the burning process, the characteristic course and dynamics of fire in the interior from the point of view of the building product, structure and structural system, the fire code in the Czech Republic and related European legislation, fire safety solutions for buildings, passive and active fire protection, dedicated fire safety equipment in constructions.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to the subject and basic terms in fire safety of buildings (legislation, ČSN, categorization of buildings, statistics, terminology)

2. Fire compartments, fire risk, fire safety level (SPB)

3. Fire resistance of loadbearing and fire separation structures

4. Facade and roof systems as a fire-safe building envelope

5. Escape routes (definition, types, use, assessment)

6. Fire hazard area

7. Equipment for fire fighting (access roads, boarding areas, internal and external emergency routes, fire water supply, portable fire extinguishers)

8. Installations , fire safety of panel apartment buildings

9. Air conditioning

10. Fire safety of photovoltaic systems and electromobility

11. Fire safety systems introduction, permanent supply of electricity, lighting, signs

12. Electric fire alarm

13. Fire suppression systems

14. Equipment for heat and smoke removal

Each week there are 2x 2h lectures - some topics have a subsidy of 4h (2x lecture).

Syllabus of tutorials:

Exercise 1 - 2: Introduction to the exercise and basic fire technical terms

Exercise 3 - 4: Fire risk

Exercise 5 - 6: Building construction

Exercise 7 - 9: Escape routes

Exercise 10 - 11: Separation distances and fire hazard area

Exercise 12: Equipment for fire fighting

Exercise 13: Completion of exercises, credit

Study Objective:

The aim of the subject is to familiarize students with the principles of designing fire safety of buildings, i.e. especially with the principles of passive and active fire protection. In the exercise, students prepare a simplified fire safety solution as part of the building's project documentation for a building permit.
