The aim of the course is to understand the mission and the principles of regional/municipal development, the complexity of regional politics and the concepts such as sustainability, subsidiarity and partnership; to create a strategy of regional/municipal development, a plan of communication with stakeholders, institutions and general public; to discuss the challenge of public issues and public choice; to use the models and tools of practical strategic planning, modelling scenarios and making a choice of the most appropriate strategy.

. development of society and planning, various philosophical and theoretical approaches, strategic management vs. strategic planning, managing institution vs. managing region/municipality
. democracy and public society, principles and methods of participative planning incl. practical demonstration
. stakeholders and their influence on development activities, power, planning based on communication vs. planning based on power tactics
. various types of plans and their coordination, multi-professional teams

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
. Explain the difference between the strategic management of profit-driven economical subjects, public administration and regional/municipal development projects
. Use the principles of strategic management in democracy, public society and participative planning approaches
. Understand various stakeholders that operate in a region, their influence on development activities and mutual relationships
. Use the methods of participative planning
. Analyse and evaluate development ideas by using the tools of strategic management
