Synopsis:

The basic methods of accelerating and driving beams. Linear and cyclic accelerators. Colliding beams.

Requirements:

Knowledge of basic course of physics

Syllabus of lectures:

1. -2. Basic accelerator classification, accelerating principles, focusing

3. Beam optics, beam emitance

4. Linear accelerators: electrostatic, RF, with electrodes, with traveling wave

5.-6. Circular accelerators: betatron, cyclotron, cyclotron modifications (synchrocyclotron, isochronous cyclotron), microtron

7. Phase stability, weak focusing

8. Electron and proton synchrotron, strong focusing

9. Colliders, circular and linear, beam cooling

10.-11. Ion sources, super conducting magnets

12.-13. Ultrahight vacuum
