Synopsis:

Subject YHNK covers two parts: the first concerns design of structures from aluminium alloys, the second deals with stainless steel structures.

Structures of aluminium alloys: Introduction and practice in designing of aluminium structures.

Structures of stainless steel: Evolution of stainless steel materials/structures and examples of realized structures. Stainless steels suitable for structures are described in a detail, including their properties. Dissimilarities in assessments of members under common loadings with respect to low-carbon steels is described for both ultimate and serviceability limit states. In the end the possibilities concerning connections of stainless steel members, erection and installation of stainless steel members are described.

Structures of aluminium alloys:

1. Introduction, examples of use.

2. Material, marking of aluminium alloys.

3. Heat affected zones, compression, bending.

4. Welded, screw and glued joints.

5. Advanced models

6. Fire resistance

Structures of stainless steel:

1. Introduction, realization of stainless-steel structures.

2. Materials and their characteristics.

3. Differences in the design of common and stainless-steel elements.

4. Serviceability limit state, tension, compression.

5. Design of stainless-steel elements in bending.

6. Joining stainless steel elements.

7. Assembly of structures and laying of visible parts made of stainless steel.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Structures of aluminium alloys:

1. Design of an aluminium truss.

2. Design of an aluminium beam.

Structures of stainless steel:

1. Design of a girder with thinwalled flanges in bending.

2. Design of a girder with thinwalled flanges in bending and compression.

Study Objective:

Ability to design load-bearing structures from aluminium alloys and stainless steel.
