Synopsis:

Advanced design of underground structures, technology of tunelling methods. Constitutive models of rock mass behaviour. Mathematical methods of solution - FEM, Distinct Element Method, validity of solutions. Summary of PC geotechnical software for modelling of underground structures. Case histories of selected geotechnical problems.

Syllabus of lectures:

1 Geotechnical investigation, rock classification

2 Soil and rock behaviour, swelling, material models, rock mass strength

3 Stresses and deformations around a circular cut with high overburden

4 Types of lining and its elements, face protection

5 Effects of earthquakes on underground structures

6 Calculation of internal forces in lining, numerical analysis of tunnels

Syllabus of tutorials:

In the exercises, practical assignments are used to practise the professional issues presented in lectures 1 to 6.

Study Objective:

Understanding the technology and design of underground structures in soils and rocks, learn to use and evaluate some software products independently.
