Synopsis:

Analysis of statically indeterminate structures by the slope-deflection method and the force method. Principle of virtual work.

Requirements:

Submission of 8 homework assignments and passing mid-term test (>50%) are required for assessment.

The final exam will comprise six problems, with a maximum score of 80. Your final grade will be assigned using the standard ECTS scale based on the combined results of your mid-term review and final tests.

Detailed specifications are available in the course Moodle space.

Course prerequisites for Erasmus students: Experience in determining reactions and internal forces diagrams for planar frames and trusses is essential, along with basic knowledge of elasticity theory for beam structures. Eight credits in structural mechanics are recommended.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Background review; static (in)determinacy; basic idea of Displacement Method for multi-span beams

2. Simplified Displacement Method (SDM) for frames without sidesway

3. SDM for pin-supported members and frames with sidesway

4. General Displacement Method (GDM) for 2D trusses

5. GDM for 2D frames I

6. GDM for 2D frames II: support settlements and temperature changes; info on review test

7. SDM & GDM: overview, symmetric structures, example of computer analysis

8. Principle of Virtual Work (PVW): introduction; principle of virtual displacements and forces

9. PVW: Deflection of multi-span beams, reduction theorem

10. PVW: support settlements and temperature changes; applications to frames and trusses

11. Force method (FM): principles, application to beams and frames

12. FM for trusses; info on the final exam

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Review of analyses of statically determinate and indeterminate structures

2. SDM for multi-span beams

3. SDM for frames without sidesway

4. SDM for frames with sidesway

5. GDM for 2D trusses

6. GDM for 2D frames

7. Mid-term review test

8. GDM for 2D frames with support settlements and temperature changes

10. Exploiting symmetry GDM; PVW for multi-span beam structures

11. PVW for truss structures

12. FM: choice of primary structures, application to beams and frames

13. FM: application to beams and frames under support settlements and temperature changes

Study Objective:
