The exercise focuses on the design of urban structure in relation to its surrounding context and on comparing different ways of achieving the same development intensity. Students work in pairs with a designated plot and design its urban form in relation to the existing urban fabric.
In the initial phase, students carry out an analysis of the surrounding area, focusing on public space, street network, plot structure, building height, floor area ratio (FAR) and functional land use. Based on this analysis, they develop an urban design proposal for the assigned plot, defining the street network, public spaces, plots, building heights, FAR and the functional use of individual buildings.
Subsequently, students prepare an alternative urban design variant with the same FAR but different urban parameters. The two variants are then compared in terms of built-up area, the amount and character of public space, and their suitability within the given context.
The outcome of the exercise consists of two urban design variants, presented through hand-drawn drawings at multiple scales and accompanied by a critical written evaluation. The exercise develops students ability to work across scales, understand street hierarchy, design in relation to the surrounding urban fabric, and critically assess urban design solutions.
- Study Objective:
-
To put forward to an attendant a review of functional units typology in a city, basic urban planning parameters of typological items in housing and transportation, but also in facilities, recreation, production and technical infrastructure, and about a mission and creation of public place - all with the purpose of preparing an attendant to design in a workshop (urban, group). of
