The aim of the course is to introduce the mechanisms of optical wave propagation in optical fibres and fibre components. Furthermore, the knowledge of optical measurement techniques and measurement methods for the characterisation of optical fibres. The content includes both methodologies for measuring design and transmission parameters for optical communication systems such as numerical aperture, attenuation, dispersion, as well as measurements of basic characteristics of active and passive elements of optical communication systems - connectors, couplers, coupling elements, refractive indices.

1. Basic concepts and definitions, optical fibres.
2. Modal structure, evanescent wave, fiber optic waveguide measurements, excitation conditions, vision filter, numerical aperture measurements.
3. Optical spectrum analyzers.
4. Measurement of rise time and transmission characteristics of optical transmission system, advanced measurements with optical reflectometer.
5. Methods for measuring fibre dispersion properties.
6. Measurement of nonlinear phenomena in optical fibres, optical solitons.
7. Optical sampling, pulse regeneration.
8. Measurement of refractive index profile, cutoff wavelength.
9. Opcal interferometers.
10. Methods based on coherent optical detection, optical polarimeters.
11. In-situ methods.
12. Methods based on signal-to-noise level separation (OSNR), noise measurement.
13. Microstructure optical fibres. Measurement of parameters of all-optical systems, software simulation tools for the design of fibre components.
