Anotace:

This course is intended to help researchers organize and effectively communicate, in English, their scientific results. While the instructor is an Electrical Engineer, the approaches are applicable to all technical disciplines.

Požadavky:

Knowledge of English at the B2 level.

Osnova přednášek:

1. Course overview. Peer review process. Best practices for scientific writing. Common mistakes.

2. Strategies for reviewing and revising. Presenting data.

3. Titles, abstracts, summaries & conclusions.

4. Guest speaker on library resources.

5. Organizing and discussing results.

6. Researching and presenting prior work. Plagiarism. References.

7. Short-form papers, extended abstracts.

8. Technical presentations.

9. Guest speaker on software use and documentation. Peer review of developed materials.

10. 5-minute presentation.

11. Journal papers. Submitting papers.

12. Other professional writing: lab journals, reports, letters, CVs, dissertations, etc.

13. Preparation of final paper & video presentation.

Osnova cvičení:

1. Discussion of student's research topic / elevator pitch

2. Draft outline of „work-in-progress“ paper

3. Presentation of data with figures and text.

4. Draft abstract for paper.

5. Draft results section for paper.

6. Draft introduction and bibliography for paper.

7. Extended abstract / 2-page paper on student's work.

8. Short presentation on work.

9. 10 minute video presentation.

10. Final 4-6 page, IEEE-style paper.

11. Paper components chosen by student for review
