Synopsis:

The AM2 course expects the student to have completed the AM1 course. It develops their skills for work with subtechnical texts, focusing also more on specific grammar, functions, and lexical items typical of ESP and EAP (e.g., definition, existence and classification of phenomena, object descriptions).

Part of the course is also guided writing. If necessary, grammar revision is included.

Requirements:

a pass in the AM1 course

Syllabus of lectures:

Definitions, classification and existence, formal rules and regulations. Description of objects (location, position, movement, properties of materials). Description of method, purpose, experiment, proces. Comparisons of objects and phenomena. Language issues typical of EAP, fundamental vocabulary in physics and chemistry.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Knowledge:

Morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, namely: impersonal structures, infinitive of purpose, prepositional phrases, abbreviations and words of Latin and Greek origin. Comparatives and superlatives. Extended formal vocabulary, extended subtechnical vocabulary, basic terms in physics and chemistry.

Skills:

To apply the acquired knowledge in more professional contexts both in speaking and writing: to define and classify objects, phenomena and processes, distinguish formal and informal language structures, read a technical text.
