The aim of the course „Database 1“ is to introduce students to the principles of normalization of relational databases and their design. The course is implemented only in the city of Děčín.

Lecture/exercise syllabus:
1. Basic concepts (data, information, information system, etc.), bulk data processing vs. database approach. Database system.
2. Database technology: characteristics of data in databases, DBS users, functions of database management system.
3. Data models: network and hierarchical.
4. Data models: relational.
5. Data models: object-oriented and object-relational. Comparison with relational data model.
6. Conceptual models, M:N relation decomposition, ISA hierarchy.
7. Relational database design, database schema normalization, normal forms of tables.
8.-13. Practical examples of relational database design.
