Synopsis:

The course Advanced electrochemistry and colloid chemistry focuses on the issue of dispersion systems with an emphasis on colloidal systems and their properties. Attention is also paid to events taking place at phase interfaces, selected methods of chemical analysis, correction of equilibrium thermodynamic data to zero ionic strength and, finally, ion exchangers.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1.Colloidal chemistry: classification and description of colloidal and coarse dispersive systems, their kinetic and optical properties, membrane permeability, comparison with true solutions, types of colloidal and coarse dispersions preparation, properties, stability.

2.Properties of phase interfaces and surface phenomena: surface tension, wetting, curved surfaces and fugacity, lyosphere, electrical double layer, and electrokinetic potential.

3.Methods based on electrokinetic phenomena: electrophoretic methods moving boundary method, capillary electrophoresis, electroosmosis.

4.Electrochemical methods of analysis: overview of methods, sample preparation, special procedures for metal speciation, applications of conductivity and potentiometric measurements, voltamperometric methods, electrochemical dissolution analysis, potentiometry.

5.Corrections of equilibrium thermodynamic data to zero ionic strength: virial coefficient method (ion interaction coefficients), Pitzer's equation, SIT (Specific Ion Interaction) theory, extended Debye-Hückel equations method, Davies' equation for activity coefficients.

6.Ion exchangers: ion exchange, properties and classification of ion exchangers.
