Synopsis:

Toric contact lenses, Bifocal and multifocal lenses and other methods of presbyopia correction. Contact lenses for children. Coloured, cosmetic and prosthetic contact lenses. Therapeutic use of contact lenses. Special types of contact lenses. Special uses of contact lenses (sports, demanding occupations and environments, patients with general diseases, etc.). Drug interactions with contact lenses. Complications of contact lenses and their solutions. Application of soft and rigid spherical lenses. Application of contact lenses in astigmatism and presbyopia. Basic and specific care of contact lenses. Inspection of patients with contact lenses.

Requirements:

Credit requirements:

1) Credit after graduation from the practicum, with good test results and 70% participation automatically in the last hour, otherwise it is necessary to succeed in the credit test. Illness documented by sick leave or a doctor's report is considered an absence.

2) Basic knowledge continuously verified by tests.

3) Minimum 50% correct answers on each test for graduation. Intermediate tests are written only once, i.e., without the possibility of correction. To receive credit, a student must have 75% correct answers on a credit test.

Exam Requirements:

1) The examination is oral, the examinee is given 2 questions. 2.

Syllabus of lectures:

1) Contact lens care products: individual care components and their importance - cleaning, disinfection, enzymatic cleaning, etc., classification of contact lens care systems, their advantages and disadvantages, care procedures for each type, basic chemical components of contact lens care products, their effectiveness and mechanism of action

2) Complications associated with contact lens wear: overview of complications and risk factors, ulcerative keratitis, GPC, manifestations of chronic and acute hypoxia, overview of other complications

3) Spherical and toric contact lenses: spherical and astigmatic correction with soft and rigid contact lenses, methods of application and specific complications

4) Hydrophobic contact lenses: hydrophobic contact lens materials, RGP lenses, silicone lenses (lenses made of polysiloxane elastomers) specific properties and surface treatments of lenses made of hydrophobic materials

5) Presbyopia correction with contact lenses: monovision, bifocal and multifocal lenses: design, properties, application methods

6) Contact lens surface treatments: coloured contact lenses, surface treatments of materials

7) Correction of irregular corneas: keratoconus correction, correction after refractive procedures

8) Correction of irregular corneas: corneal, scleral and hybrid contact lenses

9) Therapeutic use of contact lenses and other clinical implications 1: contact lenses as drug carriers, drug interactions with contact lens materials, influence of drug release dynamics

10) Therapeutic use of contact lenses and other clinical implications 2: overlay contact lenses, interaction of drugs and contact lenses, influence of drug dynamics, influence of lenses on the course of eye diseases and vice versa

11) Wearing contact lenses on special occasions: risks and differences from normal application and contraindications to wearing contact lenses in special activities: sports, employment in extreme conditions, wearing contact lenses and risks associated with it in patients with certain diseases - AIDS, infectious diseases, etc.

12) Current contact lens offer on the Czech and world market (JM) 13.
