Synopsis:

The course introduces students to the basics of mathematical, topographic and thematic cartography. It also includes an excursion into polygraphic techniques, theory of colour, copyright and editorial works.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Mathematical cartography – ellipsoids, distortions

2. Mathematical cartography – map projections

3. Practical use of various map projections in GIS tools

4. History of cartography, topographic maps

5. Cartographic language, means of expression, generalization

6. Relief visualization, toponyms

7. Thematic cartography – basics, colours, diagram maps

8. Thematic cartography – choropleths, anamorphic maps

10. Geospatial data

11. Web cartography – internet, protocols, client-server

12. Web cartography – web map services

Presentation of results

Study Objective:

The goal is to teach the students the theory and practical issues of cartographic science, making them able to create a quality thematic, topographical or schematic map, understand the principles of their creation, the correct use of colours, fonts, etc.
