Synopsis:

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the radiobiological basics of radiation protection. The basis of the course is an introduction to the biological effects of ionizing radiation (IR) at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels, an overview of deterministic and stochastic effects of ionizing radiation, health harm, risk and its evaluation, basics of epidemiology.

Requirements:

Required prerequisities are 16ZDOZ1, 16URF2.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction.

2. Time course of effects of IR

3. Primary radiation damage at the molecular level

4. Radiation damage at the cellular level

5. Radiation damage to tissues and organs

6. Deterministic effects of IR

7. Stochastic effects of IR, genetic effects of IR

8. Experimental methods of measuring the effects of IR on humans

9. Measurement of low dose radiation effects, biodosimetry

10. General epidemiology

11. Types of epidemiological studies and their properties

12. Epidemiological studies investigating the influence of IR

13. Determination of injury and risk with respect to IR
