Synopsis:

Students will learn details on the ITER basic parameters and components of ITER: the superconducting magnets, vacuum pumping, fuel cycle, cryoplant, nuclear safety, operation scenarios, ITER plasma diagnostics, schedule of construction and operation. Besides, history of the project, forms of international collaboration, projects IFMIF and DEMO as well as major fusion research centres in the world will be presented.

Knowledge of basic course of physics

Syllabus of lectures:

1) History of the ITER project, its basic parameters, mission of the project and its management.

2) Machine description, mechanical support and loads. Superconducting magnets. QA program (quality assurance).

3)Vacuum vessel, divertor and the first wall. System of remote maintenance.

4) Vacuum pumping and fuelling, tritium plant.

5) Cryoplant and the ITER cryostat. Water cooling. Power Supplies.

6) Heating systems: NBI, ICRH, ECRH.

7) Plasma diagnostics in ITER.

8) Expected plasma behaviour in ITER, operation scenarios. Control system.

9) Nuclear safety and environmental assessment of the ITER project. Overview of ITER buildings.

10) Construction, commissioning and decommissioning plans for ITER. Major milestones for fusion research and

development at ITER.

11) Present research and development for ITER. Procurement allocation and spread of cost. „Broader approach“ of the

EU and Japan.

12) Design of the International fusion materials irradiation facility IFMIF, conceptual design of the demonstration power

plant DEMO.

13) Fusion research centers in the world and their role with respect to ITER.
