Synopsis:

Construction, implementation, management, and maintenance of wooden buildings. Wood-based materials and their integration into structures. Processing and treatment of wood and wood products. Execution of log buildings, frame, post-and-beam, and half-timbered structures; assembly of light and heavy timber frames using element-based and panel construction. Implementation of large-area wooden structures. Joints in wooden constructions. Hybrid structures for low-energy buildings. Finishing and completion structures in timber buildings. Site placement and integration of wooden buildings within a specific area. Strong emphasis is placed on the ecological impact of wooden buildings and their management and maintenance throughout their entire life cycle.

Requirements:

The graded assessment will consist of:

A comprehensively developed semester project

Presentation of the semester project/workshop

80% attendance in exercises (two absences allowed)

Life Cycle of a Building and Sustainability Basic principles, relationship between operational costs and building design.

Wood as a Building Material Types of wood, properties, advantages and disadvantages, ecological benefits.

History and Tradition of Wooden Structures.

Materials for Wooden Buildings Structural timber (processing and grading), glued laminated timber, large-format wooden materials, fasteners. Advantages and disadvantages of wood as a construction material.

Structural and Chemical Protection of Wooden Buildings, Fire Protection.

Failures in Wooden Structures Biotic and abiotic defects.

Structural Systems of Wooden Buildings Overview and comparison of construction systems.

Log Wall Structures Characteristics, construction system, execution, load-bearing elements.

Timber-Framed Buildings Tradition and modern applications, characteristics, structural components, joints, sections.

Post-and-Beam Construction Balloon-Frame, Platform-Frame, characteristics, structural components, and layers.

Timber Frame Buildings Construction principles, characteristics, structural elements, wall compositions, wall connections, sections.

Skeletal Structures Characteristics, types of skeletal constructions, sectional details.

Prefabricated Panel Wall Systems Types of prefabricated panels, characteristics.

Multi-Story Timber Buildings Characteristics, specifics of multi-story buildings, structural design, sectional details.

Wooden Floors Historical floors: plank, beam, coffered, board; Modern floors: board, composite beams, box, solid wood, timber-concrete.

Maintenance, Repair, and Rehabilitation of Wooden Structures.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Analysis of the Assigned Location.

Design of Wooden Street object A small public structure with justification for its placement.

Development of Technical Drawings.

Guide for the Management and Maintenance of the designed furniture.

Creation of a Model of the proposed furniture.

Study Objective:

The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge of wooden structures and the ability to apply them in practice.
