The subject deals with the history of theater and scenic space.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to the topic – definition of basic terms, literature and sources.

2. The origin of theater – possible interpretations, the oldest cultures and their legacy

3. Theater in Ancient Greece and Rome.

4. Non-European areas.

5. Medieval European theater

6. Modern Age – Italian, English, French and Spanish contributions (general summary)

7. Baroque theater and scenography and the Czech lands

8. Theater of the 19th century in the world and here. The first theater reform. Appia, Craig et al.

9. Other waves of onset, the onset of modern scenography - German expressionism, Italian futurism, Ďagilev.

10. Russian avant-garde, Bauhaus and their reverberations. Introduction to post-war events.

11. World theater of the second half of the 20th century. The second theater reform.

12. Current trends. Interdisciplinary perception of theater space - site-specific projects, theater and public space, theater in the industrial world, absorption of experiences from other cultures and contemporary media.

13. Summary. Current discussion

Study Objective:

The goal of the study is the basic orientation of architecture students in the issue of theater buildings and the development of scenic space. It is therefore not only a building program in the typological sense, but also the concept of a given scenic space in relation to a given scenic event.
