- Synopsis:
-
The course focuses on the relationship between the structure of wood and its properties. Wood is a renewable raw material that is widely used in the construction industry. However, in addition to its many advantages, wood has disadvantages. In particular, its lower resistance to biological agents, anisotropy and dimensional change with changes in humidity are limiting in terms of its use in construction. Part of the problem discussed is the use of technologies that would reduce the negative properties of wood while maintaining its favorable properties. In addition, the course includes the study and characterization of wood-based materials and the conditions of their use for a wide range of applications in the construction industry.
- Requirements:
-
Class attendance, excused absences, and completing work in the event of non-attendance on a field trip.
- Syllabus of lectures:
-
1. Wood as a natural renewable raw material, types of wood, density, and basic properties of wood
2.Macroscopic structure of wood, anatomical structure, wood defects
3.Microscopic and submicroscopic structure of wood, chemical composition
4.Wood properties concerning use in structures, hygroscopic properties, and water in wood
5. Wood treatments for use in construction
6.Solid wood-based materials, laminated boards, veneers, and plywood
7. Special structural materials, beams
8.Agglomerated wood-based materials, moldings, bendable boards
9.Boards with mineral binders, fire protection boards
10. Insulating materials, fiberboards, and materials for wet environments
11.Wood finishes, adhesive mixtures, and chemical additives
12. Wood biodegradation, molds in construction, chemical protection
13. Conditions of use of wood and wood-based materials, standardization and testing
- Syllabus of tutorials:
-
The exercises are related to the topics of the lectures. Emphasis will be placed on the recognition of different types of wood and wood-based materials (identification test) and the characterization of the basic properties of materials about the purpose and conditions of use (according to the required standards and characteristic properties). Part of the exercises will be replaced by field trips according to the current possibilities.
- Study Objective:
-
The study's main objective is to better understand the use of wood and wood-based materials in structures and the relationship between their structure and properties. By completing the course, students will expand their competence in the technological processing of wood and natural materials for structural purposes and will be able to design the most suitable material with properties optimized for a given structural design or application.
