Department of Process Engineering
Synopsis:

The subject deals with the project planning and balancing of production lines from the initial design through the

construction to the project management, including the economic assessment and evaluation and risk management of the project. The course is focused on the methods of balancing and designing, the safety of production lines and planning of the equipment maintenance.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

•Line balancing: basic concepts, formulation of solved tasks, procedures for solving the system of governing equations.

•Line balancing: mass and enthalpy balances. Source terms, additional conditions. Chemical reactions.

•Line balancing: Methodology of model compilation and solution (definition of balanced parts, compilation of

incidence matrix and of coefficient matrix, determination of the number of balance equations, formulation of

additional relations, model resolvability).

•Line balancing: Balancing from experimental data, optimization of operational parameters of production lines.

•Design process (process design, plant design). Types of project documentation. Design documents. Legislative

requirements for project documentation.

•Capital Cost Estimating (fixed capital investment, working capital). Estimating revenues and production costs

(variable cost of production, fixed costs of production, revenues).

•Estimating of engineering costs and offsite costs.

•Estimating purchased equipment costs. Estimating installed costs. Cost escalation, location factors.

•Economic evaluation of project. Cash flow during a project. Simple methods for economic evaluation (payback time, ROI). Present value methods (time value of money, net present value, DCFROR) Annualized cost methods.

•Supply chain. Types of contracts, content of the technical and commercial part of the contract.

•Project construction management: definition and analysis of project management processes (time management, cost management, quality management, human resource management, risk management process, purchasing management).

•Safety and Loss prevention Material hazards, process hazards, analysis of product and process safety, health

protection. Legislative requirements. Hazard and operability studies (HAZOP).

•Equipment maintenance.
