Department of Process Engineering
Synopsis:

The study is focused on operations and processes occurring in heterogeneous mixed systems. It describes these

operations and equipment design of relevant mixing equipment, i.e. mechanically agitated tanks, reactors and

bioreactors, dispersing equipment, static mixers, in-line mixers, columns and fluidization equipment. The course

develops knowledge obtained in the Master´s program and creates the basis of mass transport operations for students studying other specializations.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

•Unit operation categories executed in heterogeneous mixed systems.

•Basic parameters of the heterogeneous dispersion systems s-l, l-l and g-l.

•Hydrodynamics of the mixed systems, turbulence, and residence time distribution, and micro-mixing.

•Mixing of non-Newtonian fluids and dispersions.

•Hydrofoil agitator.

•Suspension types and its behavior, homogenization, impeller power input, energy dissipation, particle suspension, re-suspension, mass and heat transfer, chemical reactions in systems solid-liquid.

•Dispersion preparation and suspension stabilization.

•Emulsions types and its behavior, phase equilibrium, homogenization, impeller power input, energy dissipation, dispersion and emulsion stabilization, mass and heat transfer, chemical reactions in the immiscible liquid-liquid systems.

•Aerated systems and equipment types, homogenization, impeller power input, energy dissipation, gas aeration in liquid, gas void-up, impeller and column flooding, mass and heat transfer, chemical reactions in systems gas-liquid.

•Design of mixing equipment.
