Synopsis:

The lecture covers physical principles and selected advanced topics in nonlinear optics for quantum technologies, namely interaction processes in nonlinear optical media, selected nonlinear effects in material media, nonlinear properties of photonic and plasmonic nanostructures, and applications of nonlinear optical effects for quantum technologies. It also discusses currentphysical problems and topics in these areas.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction –general overview of linear and nonlinear systems, approximations of nonlinear systems.2. Interaction processes in nonlinear optical media –microscopic and macroscopic description 3. Classical and quantum description of interaction processes –classical and quantum nonlinear optics4. Classificationof nonlinear optics –resonant and nonresonant processes, Manley-Rowe relations, phase matching and synchronism.5. Three-wave mixing with 2nd order nonlinearity, four wave mixing with 3rd order nonlinearity, solutions of Helmholtz coupled wave equations6. Selected nonlinear effects in materialmedia 1 –Light-induced refractive index changes, selffocusation and automodulation effects, spatial and temporal solitons, electrooptical effect, photorefractive effect. 7. Selected nonlinear effects in material media 2 –Nonlinear light scattering, optical phase conjugation, nonlinear absorption effects, and nonlinear effects with short pulses8. Applications of selected nonlinear effects9. Materials with nonlinear optical properties 10. Nonlinear properties of photonic and plasmonic nanostructures11. Application of nonlinear optical effects for quantum technologies
