In the course, the student will learn about the use of laser radiation in medical applications for diagnosis and treatment. In the introductory lectures, they will learn about the principle of the laser, its main parts and parameters. An overview of laser systems and their use in medicine will be given. He will acquire basic knowledge about the interaction of laser radiation with tissue, their division into primary and secondary factors. At the end, they will be introduced to specific applications of lasers in medicine.

To obtain credit: 80% participation in exercises, preparation of reports and protocols, credit test for 51 points
Requirement to take the exam: completion of the written exam paper (10 questions on the material covered, including examples of laser parameters calculation.

1. Introduction to the subject - radiation, laser, laser medicine
2. Laser – stimulated emission, main parts of the laser, interaction EM wave with AP and its parameters
3. Laser - active medium and open resonator, Laser dynamics – velocity equation
4. Basic division of laser systems – continuous, pulsed, type of active environment, solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers,dye lasers
5. Interaction of radiation with tissue – absorption, scattering, fluorescencePrimary and secondary factors of interaction with tissue.

8. Application of lasers in oftalmology, dermatology, urology, cardiology and angioplasty

The aim of the study is to acquaint students with modern trends in diagnostics and therapy in medicine using lasers and to acquire basic knowledge of the laser principle and its parameters important for specific applications in medicine.
