The course provides a comprehensive view of the source of ionizing radiation occurring in the environment. It includes information, methods of measuring, and calculating effective doses from individual sources of ionizing radiation and discusses related radiation protection.



Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction, quantities and units, international and czech legislation, dose assessment, cost benefit, examples of dose assessment, models for calculating internal contamination and committed effective dose.

2. Cosmic radiation, origin, distribution, assessment, measurement.

3. Radiocarbon dating and other methods of age determination using radionuclides.

4. Terrestrial radiation, dose assessment, NORM, TENORM.

5. Detection equipment and instrumentation, calibration, terrestrial spectrometry, modern trends in instrumentation.

6. Physics of radon, OAR, EOAR, F, WLM, radon in soil air, methods of radon measurement, radon index.

7. Radon diagnostics, data analysis, radon controlling .

8. Uranium mining, wastes and their remediation, radioactive objects and environmental contamination, old loads.

9. Overview of artificial radionuclides, models of migration in the environment.

10. Evaluation of nuclear accidents.

11. Nuclear fallout contamination - measurement, radioactive fallout and radionuclides from nuclear facilities.

12. Repository of radioactive and nuclear wastes and materials.

13. Analytical methods for determination of radionuclides in environmental samples.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Calculations related to environmental radioactivity.

2. Detection of cosmic rays and cosmogenic radionuclides.

3. In situ measurement and sampling.

4. Practise in radon detection.

5. Surface contamination and decontamination.

6. Practise from analytical methods of radionuclide determination.

7. Practical calculations of radionuclide propagation in the environment.
