- Synopsis:

The course focuses on the materials and components of historic buildings and the technology of their restoration. In particular, stone, clay and wood, plaster, surface protection, and building binders (gypsum, lime, cement) are studied in detail.
- Requirements:

The course requires no prerequisites. A condition for graduation is the submission and defense of a seminar project, the topic of which is chosen with regard to the field of the dissertation.
- Syllabus of lectures:

1. Historical development of building materials for load-bearing structures, including assessment of compatibility with modern materials with regard to legislative requirements.
2. Historical development of plaster, focusing on material composition and application technology in different architectural styles.
3. Historical development of coating systems from ancient Egypt to modern coating systems.
4. The evolution of wooden structures, special historical and contemporary elements, their restoration and reconstruction.
- Syllabus of tutorials:

The course does not include any exercises. This course is primarily aimed at self-study. There will be four lectures during the semester, after which the student will choose a topic for a seminar project. The student will work independently on the seminar project and will consult with the teacher throughout the semester.
- Study Objective:

The main aim of the study is to gain knowledge of the development of materials and technologies in different time periods in different artistic styles, from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Classicism, through the 19th century from Empire to Art Nouveau and the present. Legislative requirements and the possibilities of using contemporary materials in the reconstruction of historic buildings with regard to conservation and sustainability will also be discussed.
