Supervisor:
Department of Material Engineering and Chemistry
Synopsis:

This course is designed for students interested in the natural sciences, combining theoretical and practical skills in building chemistry, without chemical formulas and equations. It touches on issues related to the composition, preparation, and use of basic building materials. It extends the knowledge acquired in Chemistry.

Requirements:

For assessment to be awarded, attendance at the exercise with the submission of a report and passing the test at more than 50% is required.

One excused absence for the exercise.

Attendance at lectures is recommended.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to the chemistry of building materials.

2. Chemical and physical properties of water.

3. Chemistry of metal building materials.

4. The fundamentals of electrochemistry, metals corrosion.

5. Silicates and aluminates.

6. Rocks.

7. Binders.

8. Ceramic and glass.

9. Polymers.

10. Wood and resins.

11. Coatings, adhesives, sealants.

12. Analyses of building materials.

13. Summary and repetition.

Syllabus of tutorials:

I. crystalize.

II. optical microscopy.

III. qualitative chemical analysis.

IV. quantitative chemical analysis.

V. properties of water.

VI. dilution of solutions.

VII. density.

VIII. polymers analysis.

IX. destilation.

X. pozolana activity.

XI. analysis of elements.

XII. chemical calculation.

Study Objective:

The goal of this subject is recognition of building chemistry not only in the theoretical but also in the practical usage.
